ENGAGE THEM ANYWHERE

Dueteronomy 6:6-7 *And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.(7) Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up*

I love children. They are wonderful and delightsome to be with. The times I am around my children to preach or teach scriptures is cherished greatly starting from morning devotion time. At a time, we bought them bible story books and that was what they used to learn basic stories in the bible.

Later, after we exhausted the story books, we started using cartoon bible stories on youtube for devotion. They made learning scriptures fun. Even me as an adult, I became a child again because I just couldn't use high sounding words to communicate the gospel to them. I used age appropriate methods.

In the opening text, God instructed that his commands be taught to our children repeatedly without restriction. The emphasis is that when they are at home, on the road, when going to bed and when getting up, they should be taught God's word. No restriction.

Another dimension is introduced to us there. A number of us restrict teaching of scriptures to our children only to morning devotion time. In fact, in most homes, the only time scriptures is taught or shared is in the morning. That ought not to be.

If we intend raising children that will be soaked and immersed in the word of God, we must talk scriptures with them while walking, driving or during casual moments with them. The idea of restricting learning of scriptures to morning time only is inadequate. We must do it at every opportuned time and be creative about it.

There was a time I taught my children about rapture. I knew they did not understand it fully. One day, I was in the living room while they were watching one of their favourite action packed television program for kids. In the movie, the actors disappeared and re appeared elsewhere. It dawned on me quickly that I could explain what rapture is to them from that scene.

Quickly, I told them that when rapture happens, God's children will disappear from the earth like the guys we saw on t.v. and re appear in heaven. They were happy because what they saw was thrilling.  The concept I taught them during one of the morning devotions is now clearer to them because of the graphic illustration.

If I had waited for another morning devotion time to explain rapture to them, they may struggle to understand it.  Use every opportunity you have to engage your children explaining God's word to them.  While walking to school with them, while watching t.v., in the car while driving them to school. Do it creatively and passionately.

Action Point:

Use day-to-day happenings, environmental happenings and casual case studies to drive home the truth of the bible to them.
