Genesis13:13 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. NIV
After Lot and Abram separated, Lot relocated to one of the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. In the opening chapter, the bible didn't say he lived in Sodom. His house was beside Sodom or along the road leading to Sodom. Why the emphasis about Sodom? The city of Sodom&Gomorrah were known for their iniquity: "So the Lord told Abraham, “I have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant", Genesis 18:20(NLT). In Sodom, homosexual sin was common. That's where the term "Sodomy"( Anal sex between men) was coined.
In Genesis 13, Lot was living near Sodom but in Genesis 19, we saw that he had moved into Sodom. Sodom pulled him in. His initial intention of living near Sodom may be harmless but his placement was wrong. He moved gradually until he found himself in Sodom. That's the danger of staying around sin for a long time. Much later, we were told that righteous Lot slept with his daughters( under the influence of alcohol by his daughters) because he was tormented with the lawlessness he saw&heard in Sodom (2Pet2:7-8). His daughters used the wisdom of Sodom to get pregnant. You had the mind not to fornicate but you're living in the same flat with a sister that is not your wife. Your intention was to accommodate her and provide shelter but your mind is under sexual torture night and day. You've pitched your tent wrongly, it is just a matter time, you'll fall into sexual sin head long if you don't take the right action.
In 1Thess5:22, Apostle Paul said: "Stay away from every kind of evil"(NLT). You cannot afford to pitch your tent near sin, it is magnetic and alluring. Sometimes, we don't have the intention to do certain things but we do them because we place ourselves in an environment where that thing thrives. Whether we believe it or not, our immediate environment ( physical & spiritual) play a great role in our lives. There are relationships you need to break before they break you. Don't be a friend to a thief or sexually immoral person if you don't want to do same. Any man that want to please God must be very far from the things that displeases Him.
Father, I receive the grace to pitch my tent rightly in Jesus name.
