Sometime ago, a celebrity wanted to trend on social media just to promote his upcoming song. He posted something about abusing a minor. Not long after, the law enforcement agents decided to prosecute him based on his confession. Later, he came online to confess that he posted the nonsense because he wanted to trend online to promote his upcoming release. He was careless with words and that landed him in trouble. What is idle talk/ words? A good synonym for this is careless talk/ words. It is foolish talk, words lacking grace. When words are spoken carelessly without thinking about what the outcome might be, such a person will be adjudged unwise. Idle talk is not far from those that talk excessively. Jesus spoke against Idle words saying, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36). Those who fail to guard their mouth will become guilty of idle talk. That was the reason Paul warned saying, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”( Eph 4:29). Obviously, from Pauline thought, Idle words do not carry any iota of benefit or blessing. In fact, Idle talkers are poverty prone: “In all labor there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty” ( Proverbs 14:23). Before you talk, ask yourself If your words will bless or cause trouble. Keep your mouth shut If your words won't edify. Guard your mouth so you don't become guilt of idle talk.
