In history, one of the ways to experience a spiritual breakthrough is through intense fasting and prayer. I read about the fasting regimen of Apostle Ayo Babalola, Apostle Omotunde Emmanuel and other great men in history, I concluded that no man can do exploits without taking fasting seriously. Omotunde Emmanuel and some friends decided to fast for months in the woods. What followed was a great outflow of the supernatural.
History told us that Prophet Omotunde will line sick people up and just make a simple declaration over them: "Oluwa ya si mimo" meaning, Lord sanctify them. Everyone who came on the healing line got their healing without exception. The blind, lame, cripple and all got their healing and miracles. All that did not happen until after a season of intense fasting.
There are believers who want to operate in the supernatural but are averse to fasting. One excuse they give is that Jesus has fasted for them so they need not fast again. This shows their low level of understanding about how spiritual things work.
The Pharisees asked Jesus why his disciples were not fasting. Read his response: “...Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast"( Mark 2:19-20 NLT).
Jesus is the bridegroom in that scripture, when he was with his disciples bodily, fasting was not necessary but he made it clear that when He (the bridegroom) is taken away, they will fast. He has ascended to heaven, we are in the days of intense fasting and waiting on God. To say a believer should not fast is anti bible.
Quickly, let me put an agelong belief in the right perspective. Some believe we fast to receive power. That is not all that true neither is it in line with scriptures. The power of God is in every believer baptized with the Spirit. If it were not so, Jesus' promise of power in Acts 1:8 for those who receive the Holy Spirit would be regarded as a fake promise. If you are baptized in the Spirit, power is in you already. You did not receive partial power but the fullness of it.
However, what fasting does is to release the power trapped within by silencing or weakening the flesh which has hithertho hindered the outflow of power. The primary purpose of fasting is to deal with the flesh so that what is trapped within can flow out unhindered. Fasting does not give a new power per se because it is there the day you got baptized. Fasting only releases what flesh has trapped.
That is why fasting must be done concentratedly in a way that will weaken or deaden fleshly impulses until we become super sensitive to spiritual things. Your fasting won't be effective If you feed the flesh and concentrate on things that fuels carnality. It is a moment of focus on spirituals. The essence of fasting is to make you more 'spiritual' than you were on a regular eating day. Also, you have not truly fasted until you sense a surge of power outflowing from within.
As you fast, spend more time in prayer than usual, study the bible more and listen to soul lifting music. Reduce your interaction and contact with people or things that can drain you spiritually. This is the reason our fathers started the idea of having prayer mountains. A place where people can concentrate on God without distraction not a place for rituals as some have turned it to.
