THE TRAP OF PLENTY

Dueteronomy 8:10-11 *When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. (11) " But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today* (NLT)

I have heard some believers talk about how their devotion to God in prayer, bible study and church attendance nose dived when they relocated abroad. I have read these from the comment of some people online.

They posited that suffering was their major reason or drive for their commitment to God while in Africa but the moment they got to a place where basic amenities are provided, they did not see any need for their erstwhile commitment to God.

This attitude is what God warned the Israelites against in the opening text. God knew they had tendency to relax in worship and devotion to him because of the  many blessings and plenteous provisions in that land. It is a trap that comes with plenty.

There is a trap that comes with plenty. It is the trap of laxity in spiritual things. While in pains and still trusting God for miracles, people pray, fast and get committed to God but the moment they receive answers to their requests, they become lukewarm.

If you don't want to fall into this trap, I want to implore that you start serving God for the right reason not because you want your needs met. Need-driven Christianity is no christianity.

The reason people forget God soon in times of plenty is because their commitment to God previously was because of the need they wanted God to meet not because they love him.

Those who serve God because of their love for God will never turn their backs against him even If you give them a room filled with gold. They are not moved by gold, they are moved by God's love.

Those who love God will not mind whether their needs are met or not because the motive for their devotion is not for their needs to be met. It is primarily because of their love.

Today, I want you to adjust and shift your motives. Start serving God because you love him not only because you want your needs met so that when you enter into your season of plenty, you will remain steadfast.
