REMOVE NEHUSHTAN

2 Kings 18:4 *He removed the pagan shrines, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke up the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because the people of Israel had been offering sacrifices to it. The bronze serpent was called Nehushtan* (NLT)

I read about an evangelist who removed his suit on a crusade ground. He waved it to the crowd and people began to fall under power. The anointing was so strong. He did that as led by the Spirit.

At other times, he did the same thing and it became a practice in his ministry to wave his suit during ministrations. A father in the faith called to caution him that waving suit in every meeting might not be God's pattern for reaching the people. He understood what he meant and took caution.

You see, the very first time he waved his suit, it was by divine instruction and it was a one time instruction for that meeting only but he thought it was something for all meetings whereas the Holy Spirit was not involved anymore. That's how we corrupt the move of God.

The danger in such repeated actions is that the people's faith and attention will shift from Christ to his suit. His suit will become an idol of some sort. Instead of them to listen to God's word and exercise their faith in the word, they'll be waiting for when suit will be waved. That is subtle idolatry that has crept into the church today.

People idolize material medium such as water, anointing oil, mantle, etc and neglect simple faith in God's word and the name of Jesus. If you declare a mantle service, people will come in their numbers but only a few will attend a service where only the word will be taught. Some have anointing oil for different purposes and they apply it when needed. It is like a totem that is sacred.

The children of Israel had the same problem. When fiery serpents invaded their camp, God told Moses to make a brazen serpent and hang it on a pole. Anyone who looked at it lived. That serpent was not the giver of life but it was only a type and shadow of Christ hung on the cross who will become the ultimate giver of life. What God had in mind was far greater than serpent but Christ.

God was looking forward to a time when the nations will look unto Christ and be saved but after the death of Moses, the Israelite kept that brazen serpent Moses made and turned it to an idol. They called it Nehushtan. It was king Hezekiah that removed it (2 Kings 18:1-4).

God doesn't want us to idolize things no matter how sacred it looks. Our faith is meant to be in Christ and his finished work on the cross not in things. As we look unto Christ, things will take shape in our lives.

Hebrews 12:2 says, "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God"

Action Point:

Look unto Jesus. Don't put your faith in device or creed.
