DANGERS OF COMFORT

2 Chronicles 12:1 *But when Rehoboam was firmly established and strong, he abandoned the Law of the Lord, and all Israel followed him in this sin*.

I watched a christian movie by EVOM years back. In that movie, there was a brother who was trusting the Lord for a job after school. During the period of his waiting, his prayer life was on fire. He studied the bible, evangelized and was active in the church.

After he got a job, he became cold. He abandoned his personal consecration and became lukewarm due to his new status. That's what I call the danger of comfort.

The bible told us about the backsliding of Rehoboam. The opening text says that he abandoned the law of God after he was firmly established.

Let's liken Rehoboam to that brother who was devoted to God and his kingdom while asking him for a better life but went into lukewarm mode after his prayer was answered.

I love comfort. I hate discomfort especially as regards kingdom service. As a field missionary of years, I know what it is to do ministry struggling and in comfort. The latter is better. From experience, flying for a long journey is better than going by road or trekking.

However, comfort has its own danger If one is not rooted before it comes. A number of believers cannot handle comfort. They cannot manage it because it attacks their consecration and devotion to the Lord.

Some promised God they will evangelize more if he gives them a vehicle. Some vowed to give more to missions if God give them a good job. Some stopped attending weekly services after experiencing that elevation. Some even abandoned the secret place entirely. These are the dangers of the comfort.

I have heard about some people abroad who claimed they stopped praying like they were in Nigeria the moment they crossed the border. That's backsliding wearing the colours of post Christian Europe. That is not the will of God for any believer.

God is not looking for people with momentary commitment. He want his children to be consistent in their walk with him so that he can entrust them with greatness. If comfort can make you abandon your consecration, it reveals your spiritual immaturity.

The reason comfort sways people from the path of Christian consecration is because of poor rootedness in the faith. Many are serving God for what they want to get not because they love him. Those who truly love God will neither be swayed by comfort or discomfort.

Paul says, "Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? ( Romans 8:35 NLT).

Those with conditional commitment to God will be victims of backsliding either in times of comfort or discomfort. The moment your consecration is tied to "As I do this for you, I expect you do this for me", you'll run into serious crisis the moment that thing is done because you'll no longer have any reason "to do" for Him any longer. Some served God for visa, as soon as they got it, things changed for worse in their consecration.

Start loving God genuinely so that neither comfort nor discomfort will sway you from him. God is not looking for momentary or conditional commitment.
